Brent Welsh is a Regulatory Hydrogeologist currently working at the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) as an Industry Performance Lead. Brent was part of the team that delivered AER’s Water Use Performance report for in situ operations. He has eleven years of experience regulating the in situ oil sands sector, that has included overseeing in situ performance presentations, developing directives, investigating incidents, and supporting the development of regional groundwater management frameworks. Brent has also been involved in the regulatory review of numerous environmental impact assessments, water sourcing and wastewater disposal applications, and surveillance monitoring reports. He has a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from the University of Alberta and a Master of Science in Hydrogeology from the University of Waterloo. Before joining the AER in 2013, Brent worked for Alberta Environment as a District Hydrogeologist, where he conducted long term study to assess groundwater-surface-water interactions at closed-basin lakes in the Beaver River basin; and as a consultant, where he mostly monitored and remediated groundwater at landfill sites. He enjoys canoeing in the region with his family, and sharing his passion for the hydrologic cycle with his children.
